Why Hiring a Lawyer Could Be the Best Move for Protecting Blind Rights and Peace of Mind

Brian Schnabel explores the challenges blind individuals face when navigating family, community, and professional relationships, and weighs the benefits of hiring legal counsel. It’s about seeking empowerment, protection, and peace of mind in a world often driven by mistrust and exploitation.

Thursday, July 24, 2025: 8:00 AM: The past few days have been smooth, but I feel apprehensive. Interestingly, the idea of hiring a lawyer to help me deal with all things documentation wise and more has been kicking around in my head. I don’t know why. But maybe it’s an idea that has some merit the way things are going for me right now.

Maybe a lawyer’s assistance is what is truly needed to ensure that everyone from certain family members, Goldberg Realty, the State of New Jersey Department of Community Affairs to Premier Health and others continue to play nice moving forward. Extreme? “Yes!” Expensive? “Yes!”

It’s clear to this blind guy that many individuals in my family and wider community view me primarily as property or a source of profit. It is apparent that I am sometimes regarded as a liability, even in social contexts.

Many seem to harbor concerns about being held accountable for my actions, while making an assertive effort to avoid personal responsibility for their own corrupt behavior.

I’m a thing to be used by many but kept at a distance otherwise. Few are loyal to me and many fear me. So why not have a lawyer on hand to deal with it all? How many people would want to play games if they knew certain documentation like leases and other financial matters were being managed by an attorney? It might also be helpful in doing better background checks on individuals on a social level, too, for my own protection and peace of mind.

Finding funding for this may be challenging, but it could be worthwhile. I’ll meditate on it, trusting that if it’s meant to be, the opportunity and resources will come at the right time.

Certainly, having always been a ferocious independent advocate, access to a lawyer or small law firm would help me assist others in similar situations, while addressing my own needs. I think that’s a real possibility. “Who knows what awesomeness this persistent, yet crazy, idea could lead to.”
