At 3:34 AM this morning I became vaguely aware of the fact that Julia was laying in bed next to me going solo. I was really out of it so, rather than join in, I decided to just lay there and listen until I went back to sleep. And… “She did have headphones on.”
I knew this because I could hear the sound of the meditation track she was listening to very faintly as I lay there observing the whole scene. And… I did eventually fall back asleep.
“Hey!” If Julia is having a sleepless night and wants to handle it herself, “I have no problem with that.” I took the headphones being on as a sign that this was just a special time for her alone and she really didn’t want anybody else crashing her party, “Which is totally fine by me.”
I was totally contented to just lay there and observe until I fell back asleep, and I most certainly wasn’t expecting to open my eyes to, “Head in Progress.” But I did. It happened and it was awesome as always.
When we finally did get out of bed this morning, we did our usual, taking a shower together, having coffee, etcetera. But sooner or later you’ve got to get down to business and get things done, “Right?”
So, Julia headed off to do some couples counseling at the office in town and I headed over to Newtonian Gardens to install a new keyboard for our neighbor Sharon, who was kind enough to hand me a check for seventy-five dollars when all was said and done. When I looked at her with a questioning expression, she simply said, “Take your wife out to dinner or something. Enjoy!”
So, I did what Sharon had suggested when Julia came home. I was rather surprised though when I explained the deal to her about the check and everything because where Julia wanted to go was not exactly one of the places I was expecting.
“Yeah!” She wanted to go to McDonalds, “If you can believe that.” But… That’s what she wanted and a couple of McGriddles later, “She was a happy girl.”
Of course, my wife being who she is, I kind of figured that sooner or later there was going to be a comment made about my special talents in the area of plugging things in. She knew that Sharon had some mobility issues and that’s why I had gone over to set things up for her with the new keyboard in the first place. But… She likes to tease…
But her brand of teasing usually leads to special things happening. So… I was neither offended nor surprised when, all of a sudden as we were going home, I heard her say slyly, “Honey? When we get in the house, would you be willing to plug something in for me?”
So, once we got back in the house, I spent the rest of the evening with my wife, helping her make the connection she so desperately craved. It was a beautiful thing, and she is now sleeping comfortably in our bed, where I look forward to falling asleep beside her, “Very soon!”
