Streamlining WordPress: Custom Plugins and URL Adjustments

Brian Schnabel’s war on housework here at Newtonian Gardens in Newton NJ also included optimizing The BriaSphere by refining WordPress with custom plugins, which helped tighten the site’s backend for improved functionality. Conflict-free code was the focus, ensuring efficient site performance.

Thursday, June 19, 2025: 11:22 PM: I got the dishes washed. The laundry is done, which means folded and put away, too. The sidebar on The BriaSphere has also been taken care of the way I want it.

The backend of The Briasphere is now tighter than it usually would be, with more adjustments still planned. I’m happy with my custom plugin that removes the “category” base from all category archive URLs. WordPress initially resisted changes made via cPanel’s URL Redirect function, but using Microsoft Copilot Pro to create a custom plugin, I achieved my goal.

From there, I moved on to silencing unnecessary author archive URLs, like https://example.com/author/writersname/, by redirecting them cleanly to the homepage. No need to expose author directories that don’t serve the vision.

If there’s one thing I really don’t like about WordPress out of the box, it is its redundancy. I really don’t think we need multiple lists of the same post. But there’s ways of fixing that and another custom plugin or too should have that mess in the bag.

Both plugins are running without conflict. Clean and minimal, just the way I prefer my codebase. There will be more to come on this score in the next week.

Today though, I accomplished what I set out to do. “That’s a Win!”
