If ever there was a time that I thought Julia might have wet herself from laughter, it was this evening as we were leaving Ellen’s complex after an enjoyable meal of lasagna and wine for both of us. Yup. I do drink wine on occasion, “Especially if it’s white.”
“But anyhow…” As we were leaving the complex this woman pulls into the driveway just as we’re nearing the end of it and says, “Excuse me sir. But… Is this Barn Hill?” to which I replied, “No. This is Liberty Towers.”
Then I asked her if she wanted to get to Barn Hill and she said, “Yes.” So, I walked over to the car… Kept her talking so I could establish where she was because, as I said to her, “I’m just checking to make sure I’m looking at you and not talking to the hood.”
At which point she laughed, and she did pay close attention when I gave her the directions. Then she asked, “Well… What place is this?”
I told her, “This is Liberty Towers.” She asked, “Is this a care facility?” I said, “No. This is a low-income housing place that caters to folks that are fifty-five and disabled and or senior citizens.”
She said, “Oh… But you’re blind.” To which I replied with a big smile on my face, “And you’re observant.”
I then asked her what her name was, and she said her name was Carrie. I introduced myself and shook her hand and told her to have a good evening. I walked away from the driver’s side of her car saying, “My wife and I are going to go this way so please don’t run us over.”
She drove off and Julia just lost it. When she finally did compose herself, she said, “You just stand there and smile at her after she said the obvious and come back with, ‘And you’re observant’.” She goes, “If you could have just seen the look on her face… It was priceless!”
